I have no idea if you will all see this, but whatever.
To xyz777:
“Racism is not a series of isolated hate crimes.”
I never said racism was simply this?
“And about POC committing hate crimes against white people: a. It never happens. If it did, it would be all we ever saw on the news (which always protects the integrity and dignity of white people first and foremost) “
The do happen. How can you actually say “it never happens?” so surely?
Are you saying that the examples I mentioned within my post are not racist hate crimes? I clearly stated that the victims of these attacks were targeted due to their skin colour - white. In one case, the attackers were screaming abuse at the victim which was racist. If yelling “You white slag” is not racial abuse, then what is it? They didn’t have to bring in the fact she was white, did they? What is this if it is not a racist hate crime?
Also, in the UK, the Charlene Downes event was all over the news actually.
Most recently, one of our Members of Parliament (politicians) who is black was all over the news because she posted what was considered by many across the nation as a “racist” statement against white people on Twitter. Some going as far as saying she should be sacked from her position.
So yes, racism towards white people; it is sometimes all over the news, just not as much as racism towards ethnics minorities.
Yet this does not change the fact that the examples I gave are RACIST ISSUES which is the point I’m trying to make.
“b. If POC did commit hate crimes against white people, it would be a tiny drop in the ocean of ways that whites have oppressed blacks, Hispanic people, etc. etc. since the very founding of the U.S.A.”
I understand. However, this does not change the fact that the examples given are racist attacks. My point therefore is made.
To luckythinks91:
“Okay first of all, it’s “Racism= Prejudice + Power.”
I simply quoted what the girl I was arguing with said.
“Third of all watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTUf4Swb4z4”
Oh…so because he states his opinion all over Youtube and there are lots of “likes” and agreeing comments, it means he and you are right? I watched the video twice and I understand the point he is making but I still disagree that PoC cannot be racist towards whites.
I read the first link.
I never said that I thought that racism was simply “acts of meanness” like the racist attacks against whites I used as my examples. I realise it goes a lot deeper then that.
However, this does not change the fact that these attacks are indeed racist which is the point I am trying to make.
“That is all.”
I have to completely disagree. If a black or Asian person beats a white person to death simply because they hate white people, this is racism.
Racism = ANTAGONISMS DIRECTED AGAINST SOMEONE OF A DIFFERENT RACE.
Hating someone based on skin colour is racism, full stop.
Oppression is not the only action that can be used to establish racism. Racist hate crime could be anything from raping someone simply because they are a different colour in order to show how much one hates that particular race to swearing and verbally abusing them because of the same reason.
In my opinion, you can be racist towards whites whether we ( People of colour) are the underdogs in the United Kingdom and America or not.
I was arguing with someone on Tumblr who claims that the two examples of racist abuse I gave are different.
According to her, this is racist abuse:
“In the UK, where I live: The Stephen Lawrence murder case: it’s something that highlights the way the often police can and do favour whites and how this indeed is a white run society.
They didn’t investigate a racist attack properly because the victim was black and for 18 years his parents have campaigned for justice. The murderers were sentenced yesterday. They are two white men…yet the first people the police suspected of killing Stephen Lawrence 18 years ago was his best friend simply because he was black.”
And these examples are simply “prejudice” simply because the victim is white:
In 2003, Charlene Downes, a fourteen year old white girl disappeared. She was murdered and put into a kebab mincer by three Asian men who targeted her specifically because she was white.
In December last year, three Somali girls attacked a white girl, kicking her head in and ripping her hair out and yelling at her “white slag” etc. etc. i.e. racial abuse.
Uhm…in my eyes, these are racist attacks. Not just “prejudicial attacks.”
So yeah, each to their own in opinion, but it really pissed me off that this particular girl claimed that I was apparently living in a non-existent “loving peacful equality filled universe”. Surely this applies better to someone who is naive and believes that there is not such thing as racism in this day and age rather than me?
I could go on and on about this issue, but overall, I think this girl who was challenging my opinion is completely and utterly wrong.
You can be racist to white people.
If it makes any difference, I am a Black British female and she is a Black American.
Maybe that is one reason our views differ so much as I know that a lot of people in my country would agree that you can indeed be racist to white people.
I always go on about this issue, but just like in some games I’m a bit annoyed that there isn’t the choice to have a female character, I often get annoyed that in a lot of RPG games, you are unable to choose the race of your character.
There are so many people who just shrug the issue off and say “Well, it’s only a game.” But for some RPG players, you get really involved with the story line and plot and it’s nice to be able to create a character who is based on yourself.
I’m not stating that it’s “racist” that they don’t have the option to do this, it’s just something I’d love to see in the games I love!
The main games I’m thinking of right now are Dragon Age and Dragon Age II, as they are my favourite RPGs at the moment.
I’ve heard so many arguments like:
“Well, Dragon Age is based on Medieval England, so why would there be black people?”
It’s a fantasy game. I’m pretty sure Medieval England didn’t have dwarves, elves and monstrous beasts roaming it’s rolling, green meadows so having black and both Eastern and South Eastern Asian characters wouldn’t make the game any more or less strangethan it already is.
“Why would you want a character that looks like you?”
Why not? For me, simply because it would be nice…not a necessity, just nice. I remember watching Lord of the Rings when I was younger and wishing I could be an elf lol and then realising there were no black elves…..it’s nice to have a character you can identify with by race and put yourself more in their shoes. Imagine me trying to put myself in the shoes of a brunette with blue eyes and long flowing locks haha….
“You can create black characters on Dragon Age…you just haven’t tried hard enough.”
Isn’t it a bit of an issue that I do have to try hard and patiently to make a black character? The whole point of my argument is just this. There should be a pre-set race option, in my opinion. The dark skin settings on Dragon Age and it’s sequel make my characters look ill…and not black.
If Bethesda Game Studios can do it (The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - the Redguard) Then I’m sure Bioware can do this in Dragon Age III :)
